AFC Birmingham, based in Rowley Regis, will be launching a new scholarship programme linking full time football with education provision for school leavers in partnership with Oldbury Academy. The programme will allow students to gain A-Level or vocational education with an embedded performance football programme.
Students will benefit from technical coaching, football specific fitness sessions and plenty of opportunities to test out their skills representing AFC Birmingham in their youth and senior teams. In addition a variety of employability opportunities will be available to the scholars with placements working within local organisation and the change to gain FA coaching an officiating qualifications.
AFC Birmingham Chairman John Baker said “This is a great opportunity for anyone wishing to gain employment in football and sport to develop their knowledge and employability as well as provide a window into senior football. Our current U16’s are very strong and its very exciting to know that we can work with them full time to help them progress even further. Exit routes include professional football, scholarships in the USA and University so the future is looking very bright for our Academy players.”.
Oldbury Academy Head of PE Miss Boden said; ”we are really pleased to have established this new partnership and are looking forward to recruiting the first generation of learners onto the programme. Oldbury Academy has an extremely successful Key Stage 5 programme and our Sport students have achieved outstanding Sport results each year. This new partnership will add a new dimension to our 6th form and we are looking forward to offering students a more bespoke Key Stage 5 programme that allows them to study and train at the same time. Looking ahead to 2019 we already have plans to develop a Leadership programme alongside the football programme.”
